As the de facto editorial desk for Lost Laowai, I tend to get a lot of e-mail touting all the amazing things that “YOUR READERS WANT TO KNOW ABOUT”. I, perhaps overly liberally, trash the majority of them.
However, having just received notice that the 1st World Mind Sports Games is coming to Beijing, I figured I better post about it – these are clever folks, and there’s no telling what they’d do to me if I didn’t.
I mean, any dumbass can run a track or swim a few laps, but even in women’s beach volleyball (the epitome Olympic sport in my opinion) you don’t get to say shit like “won with the queen and exited with a heart to dummy’s king.” Nope, that’s reserved for the upper-echelon of sports – the Mind Sports.
So, anyone that burned their all-access Olympic pass on the air-rifle competition and found it a bit too exciting, definitely stay tuned for the 1st World Mind Sports Games – 15 days of explosive non-stop action as competitors clash wits in a bid to bring home a gold in bridge, chess, draughts (that’s smart-talk for “checkers”), go or xiangqi.
The events run from October 3rd to 18th. I don’t know if it’s a testament to the overly-cerebral folks behind the WMSG site, but it took me five minutes to find the dates it was running. You’re on your own for times and locations.
(h/t to these checkers players for bringing the event to my attention)
